1) Clear Understanding between Sample and Population (45 minutes)

The 1st 30 minutes we will spend on understanding “what is a sample” and how much it represents your study. We will discuss on various measures such as Mean, Median and Mode and what is appropriate for different types of Lab studies. We will also discuss on methods to work with Outliers and Noisy Data. Excel functions to calculate these measures will be part of the training program.


2) Understand the Variability in the Data (45 minutes)

Next 30 minutes  we will spend on Understanding Standard Deviation, Coefficient of Variation, Standard Error and what is most appropriate for different types of Data. We will further discuss on using Excel to calculate these parameters and use of Graphs to appropriately represent the data.  Focus will be on working with Outliers, Noisy Data and methods to ethically reduce the Standard Error.  


3) Are you missing on Significant Differences. (1hr 30 minutes)

When it comes down to Finding Significant Results, we use standard procedure of applying t-test with a cut off p-value of 0.05. This approach often misses on significant results as not all data follow Normal Distribution. This is the most important module of the Training Program where we explain what is a Distribution, Different types of Distribution and how to effectively use the right Test for appropriate distribution. Further on we will discuss methods to force data to follow Normal Distribution. Strong focus will be on data normalization  when working with Biological Replicates. The module will also discuss t-test,  2 Tail test vs. 1 Tail Test and working with Paired Samples. We will train the participants to extensively use Excel to perform these tests.


4) Correlation among the Data (30 minutes)

Two or more parameters  in your study can be related. Correlation Helps to Find such Relation. A value of +1 or -1 indicates strong correlation among parameters e.g. there might me strong correlation between Cell Death and Drug Concentration. Correlation can help find such relations. In this Module we will discuss the Importance of Correlation when working with multiple assays from same or related studies. We will discuss the Pearson’s Correlation and Rank Correlation; what is appropriate for certain type of data and how to calculate Correlation using Excel. In this module we will also cover Generating Publication Quality Graphs from multiple parameters using Excel.


5) Conclusion and Discussion ( 30 minutes )
